Mount
Sinai Missionary Baptist Church had a humble
beginning in 1899 in the home of Ms. Carrie
Walton which was located at Chicon and Manor
Road. Five families assembled in the home of
Ms. Walton and in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Denmon
to seek God’s direction for organizing
a church to provide praise and worship services
for their community. The group was blessed with
property at Poquito and 22nd Street and a church
edifice was constructed under the name Main
East Austin Baptist Church.
Gilbert
Fuller was the first pastor of the church. For
years, the church grew and provided spiritual
nourishment to the community under subsequent
Pastors Felton, Walker, Randle, McClain, Evans,
Scott and Marshall.
In
1948, the church called former member, L.V.
Ates as pastor. Under the leadership of Pastor
Ates, a new church structure was built in 1957
and the main entrance was changed from Poquito
to 22nd Street. The church also underwent a
name change from Main East Austin Baptist Church
to Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church.
F.C.
Ransom became pastor of Mount Sinai in 1964
and the church was abundantly blessed in membership
and prosperity. He and his wife Lillie loved
the church and praised the Lord as the church
demonstrated its generosity to the community.
Through Pastor Ransom‘s efforts, a New
Year’s Eve Watch Night Worship was established
with statewide participation. He encouraged
young ministers in the Austin vicinity by providing
preaching opportunities. Also under his leadership,
the church was renovated, a fellowship hall
was added and a note burning ceremony was celebrated.
From
1980 through 1986, the Lord blessed the church
with Pastor Earl. Pastor Harris challenged members
of Mount Sinai to "Make Christ Lord of
Our Lives." Pastor Harris instituted a
Scholarship Fund and Committee to encourage
young people to seek post-high school education.
Since
November 1, 1986, Mount Sinai has been led by
the dynamic and spirit-filled servant, A.W.
Anthony Mays. Pastor Mays leads the church in
a "Faith Ministry" and, on his spiritual
journey, the church adopted the church theme
"Ministries for Mankind."
In
1989, the congregation moved to a new location
at 1801 East 38th½ Street to accommodate
a rapidly growing membership. As a part of the
90th Church Anniversary celebration, the Mount
Sinai Christian Drill Team and other youth leaders
led a parade from the old church building to
the new church home on April 9, 1989.
In
July 1992, a 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning worship
service was added. In 1993, the church was blessed
to retire the debt of the 38th½ Street
property at the celebration of the 94th Church
Anniversary.
In
1994, Pastor Mays and the church fellowship
began actively seeking God's guidance in acquiring
a larger facility. On November 6, 1994, the
first service was held at the new church located
at 5900 Cameron Road. The theme of the dedication
service held on December 11, 1994 was "Hither
to Has the Lord Helped Us" (I Samuel 7:12).
A motorcade from 38th½ Street to Cameron
Road preceded the services as the Mount celebrated
God's grace.
The
Mount Sinai Christian Academy began operating
in 1995 based on the value of Christian education
to the future generations.
1999
marked 100 years of God’s grace to Mount
Sinai. In observing the 100th anniversary, the
Church’s debt was retired.
At
the Mount, we know that God has guided our growth
over the past 104 years. With an ever-growing
ministry, the Lord has blessed us with Pastor
A.W. Anthony Mays; Minister Emanuel Limuel, Jr.,
Assistant to the Pastor; Minister Myron Jones,
Senior Adult Minister; Minister DeChard Freeman,
Youth Pastor and Minister Michael White, Pastoral
Minister. God’s blessings to the Mount also
includes ongoing growth in our membership with
more than 3,000 members; an increase in tithes
and offerings; 43 deacons; a music ministry that
includes eight choirs, an orchestra, a church
band and a school of music; a Church School with
10 traditional and 11 non-traditional classes
taught by 63 teachers; three worship services;
and weekly Bible Studies.
Mount
Sinai has enjoyed bountiful blessings from the
Lord. Our challenge for the future is to continue
building “Ministries for Mankind.”
